Overview

This comprehensive 9-day Xinjiang tour offers an in-depth exploration of the Silk Road's most captivating destinations. Beginning in the regional capital of Urumqi, it delves into the historical oasis of Turpan before flying to the culturally rich city of Kashgar for adventures along the legendary Karakoram Highway. The journey showcases a dramatic contrast in landscapes—from alpine lakes and fertile basins to stark deserts and towering mountains—while immersing you in the region's deep Uyghur heritage and ancient history.

What is special about this tour?

This tour uniquely balances cultural immersion with epic scenic journeys. It covers all major highlights: the historical context of the Xinjiang Museum, the geothermal wonders of Turpan's Flaming Mountains and ancient Karez systems, the living history of Kashgar's Old Town and bustling livestock market, and the breathtaking alpine vistas of Karakul Lake. The journey along the Karakoram Highway to Tashkorgan and the visit to the world's highest natural arch, Shipton's Arch, provide exceptional and less-traveled experiences.

What to prepare?

Travel Documents: Valid passport and necessary Chinese visas/travel permits. A Border Permit is required for the trip to Tashkorgan; this is typically arranged by the tour operator.

Altitude & Health: The itinerary reaches elevations over 3,600m at Karakul Lake. Take precautions for altitude sickness, stay hydrated, and consult a doctor if needed. Pack a basic first-aid kit.

Clothing & Gear: Pack versatile, layered clothing for fluctuating temperatures—hot days in Turpan/Kashgar and cool conditions in the mountains. Essential items include a sun hat, high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, sturdy walking shoes, and a good camera.

Essentials: Moisturizer and lip balm for the dry climate. A power bank for your devices. Consider bringing snacks for long drives. Cash (RMB) is useful in local markets.

Best time to visit

The optimal periods are late spring (May to June) and autumn (September to early October). During these months, temperatures are pleasant across all regions, skies are clear for mountain views, and the grasslands are green. Summer (July-August) can be extremely hot in Turpan and Kashgar, though it's the best time to see the Golden Grassland at its peak. Winter is harsh, with many mountain passes closed.
